You Must Be Kidding

Is this the end for us humans

The pope should be prosecuted

I would like to follow on my yesterday’s Pic of the day showing this poor guy who’s selling stall has been cleaned up by the police to prepare the pope’s visit.

This pope declared: “You can’t resolve it with the distribution of condoms,” the pope told reporters aboard the Alitalia plane heading to Yaounde. “On the contrary, it increases the problem.”

I know the catholic church has always rejected a lot of scientific evidence and as long as it doesn’t hurt anybody who cares?  Let them continue to live in ignorant bliss if they want to.

But for the leader of a faith that counts so many millions on this planet, a percentage of which really believes in that stuff, to publicly assert something like this is condemning millions to die of AIDS.  In my eyes, this is a crime and should be prosecuted as such.

As far as I’m concerned this is not really different from Hamas’ leaders declaring that Israel should be wiped off the face of the planet.

Leaders who’s words have a significant consequence on the lives of a great number of people should be held accountable for irresponsible declarations that have a life and death impact on so many.

It’s not a war crime, and I’m not sure under which crime category this should fall, maybe we should invent something like the law of responsible public declarations.

Even though he’s a religious leader, the pope is a leader like any other and should be held accountable for his declarations and in cases like this one prosecuted and punished.

  • Prosecution of a religious leader make little sense to me. The Catholic Church is entitled to its positions.

Using a relativist approach drawing Hamas and the Church makes me queasy. One is exclusively and deliberately a murderous political organization while the other is a religious organization who doesn't actively cause Aids. As the gentleman mentioned above, condoms on their own are not the solution.

    There's no clue answer here.

I absolutely agree with your last comment in your reply to Bobo.

For excellent philosophical religious perspectives on contemporary issues might I point you to "First Things?" It may be of interest to you.

And to tell millions of catholics who really beleive the pope that condoms increase the problem is not murderous?

    I disagree
  • Hello Francois. I'm a Catholic and am at odds with my church on this issue as it pertains to AIDS/HIV. As you know from previous discussions, I'm also a Public Health student at this time. While abstinence is really the only way to stop this spread - the fact is that it is not a viable solution. At the same time, simply distributing condoms is not a viable solution either. There should be some type of health education process that goes along with this distribution. I did not find that anywhere in your discussion if that is occurring. But - I will agree with the title of this post - he's out of touch with reality when it comes to this health issue.

    Hi Bobo,

Well, what do you know, I never thought we would agree on any given issue.

I certainly agree that distribution of preservatives is not enough by a far cry but it certainly is a good start.

I don't know either whether education is part of the pope's agenda. I understand he states that we should have a "responsible and moral attitude towards sex" which I agree with of course, if accompanied by condoms.
